Book Review: Stormrage

Now, no one can claim that any of the Warcraft books are works of literary art.  But, Stormrage by Richard A. Knaak is by far the worst written of the books.  If you can move past the writing and get to the base story of the book.  You’ll find a shallow and uninteresting part of lore.

The book deals with the Nightmare that is currently inhabiting the Emerald Dream.  Through the course of the book you learn the cause of the Nightmare and how it is dealt with.  Effectively putting to rest the possibility of a future expansion dealing the Emerald Dream.  There a few revelations in the book that could effect lore in the future but, overall it is just wrapping a story line.

An interesting note about the book however, is that it is the only Warcraft Novel that takes place in current time. (Night of the Dragon could be argued to be also) That in and of itself may be a reason why I found the book rather interesting.  The other books I was able to look past their flaws to enjoy a bit of the history of the Warcraft universe.  That history greatly enriches the game experience for me when I the why, when and, how of events.  Stormrage provides none of those insights at this time.

Would I recommend it: If you are a lore nerd; yes, despite all of it’s flaws and shortcoming it is still Lore.   If you don’t care all that much about lore and only want to read one Warcaft book.  Go out and buy Arthas instead.
